SQL Anywhere for the BlackBerry Platform On Its Way
Sets new standards for data reliability and performance of mobile line of business applications

'We're pleased by Sybase iAnywhere's commitment to the BlackBerry development community and look forward to the coming launch of SQL Anywhere 11,' said Jeff McDowell, VP of Global Alliances at Research In Motion, as Sybase iAnywhere announced it will shortly preview SQL Anywhere for the BlackBerry platform from RIM.

“SQL Anywhere for BlackBerry sets new standards for data reliability and performance of mobile line of business applications,” says Chris Kleisath, Senior Director of Engineering at Sybase iAnywhere.

“Developers and enterprises alike can unwire their enterprise by building on their existing investment in the BlackBerry platform, enabling mission critical data to flow seamlessly and reliably from the data center to their frontline decision makers,” Kleisath added.

SQL Anywhere 11, including support for BlackBerry OS 4.1 and later, will be available in the second half of 2008, he said.

The SQL Anywhere database and data synchronization client provide several new key features to BlackBerry developers:

  • SQL Anywhere UltraLite relational database including transactional integrity, indexes, and SQL data access;
  • Rich, bi-directional heterogeneous data synchronization capabilities including direct support for Sybase, Oracle, Microsoft, IBM, and MySQL back-end databases
  • A pure Java ME implementation with an extremely small footprint well-suited for the BlackBerry environment.
“Applications being deployed on mobile devices are becoming increasingly complex as the capabilities and resources of the devices increase, often approaching PC functionality,” noted Jack Gold, President of J.Gold Associates, LLC. “However, the complexity of these applications often exceeds the data capabilities included in the native device OS. A robust, secure and easily synchronized data base, such as Sybase SQL Anywhere, is required to enable the same level of data integrity and manipulation as available on PCs and servers,” Gold said.

John A. Dooley wrote: HEROS (Heuristic Environmental Resolving and Optimizing Systems) are a new class of proprietary propagation analysis and control technologies. The commercial name for them is Conduit3G. While some of the math and theory behind HEROS has been scattered throughout the literature over the past few years, they are new and just being introduced as a coherent technology group. The root concept behind HEROS and Conduit3G is to abandon conventional statistical-based propagation analysis in favor of an observational-based analysis that uses fuzzy neural net technology to correlate remote sensing and field survey data in predicting coverage. We've found that this approach provides a much more accurate and high-resolution picture of propagation, especially in urbanized environments. And the net result of this improved accuracy is far greater confidence in adjusting power levels, beamwidths and...
John A. Dooley wrote: It is most certainly the case that for next-generation applications to be successful, coverage must improve in both urban and rural environments. However, wireless providers need to be careful how they approach such coverage improvement. For 3G and beyond, coverage management must be a considerably more precise operation that balances the need for strong and selective signal penetration with that of spectral efficiency. New techniques are required, which allow for the establishment of smaller, better defined and more predictable quasi-cells that yield spectrum recycling levels appropriate for current and anticipated network loads.
John I Davies wrote: Do you have a reference for HEROS? Clearly 3G networks deliver bandwidth rather than Erlangs so the trade-offs against coverage, QoS, etc. are more complex and my radio guru friends tell me that power control remains a challenge. I have seen some references to application of neural networks to these problems but I have not seen HEROS anywhere else.
Ron Ogan wrote: Wireless cellular technoloies greatly exceeds the bandwidth of wireline phone systems which allows the providers to offer more services including voice, data and video applications. Both urban and rural coverage needs to improve for 3G networks.
