Enis Berberoglu, Ozcan Alpagut, and Senator McCain
"McCain reminds me the man in the back of a hardware store who makes the keys" - David Letterman

I graduated from Bogazici Universitesi in 1982, from a four year Business Administration program which took five years for me. During my five year tenure at the world's best university campus, I was mostly busy with the exctracurricular activities than the academic program. I enrolled to the school's Arts & Science Faculty to study English Literature & Language, which lasted only one semester after getting kicked out of the program when I finished my first semester with 1.28 grade point average, which was below the minimum passing grade of 2.0 points, or a "C" average. With that verdict in my hands, I transferred to Business Administration and later graduated from that faculty.

Any how, during these five years, among many of my accomplishments, I started the university's "Cartoon Club" and elected its founder and president with the help of the school's ruling political student union which was affiliated with Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi. Well, my affiliation with the school's student union was rather incidental, when I decided to start a new student club. I was advised that I had to be approved by the student union mafia, whose leaders included, Pis Fehmi, Lesh Haldun, Topal Erdal, Kvircik Fehmi (who regularly broke in and robbed the schoopl cafeteria and got caught by school's security chief Kel Hasan several times), and their litunants.

Well, when I say the school's student union mafia, they actually served a very useful purpose of fighting the other student groups on the far left and keeping them away from power. At the time, when the country was in the verge of a political civil war between the far left and the far right groups, CHP "mobsters" (that's what they called themselves with pride) in BU actually served a good cause.

Pis Ruhi, Topal Erdal, and Enis Berberoglu were among the intellectual leaders and theoricians of CHP in Bogazici University. CHP would decide and nominate all sudent union representatives in all faculties. CHP nominees always got elected with no exceptions. Most of the time though elected CHP sudent union leaders were complete idiots with no clear qualifications. I remember "Bakkal Ozcan" for example, Ozcan Alpagut, a fairly harmless guy in my senior year at the school, was elected to the student union, with a single qualification, being a member of CHP.

I ran into Enis Berberoglu in a Turkish Airlines flight from New York to Istanbul last year. I said "aaaabi you look good, hich deyishmemishsin walla billa, except the hair." He could not recognize me :- )) I must look much different than the college years. :- ))

Enis always chose to remain behind the scenes than getting actively involved in politics. 25 years later, today, his career path is consistent with what he was comfortable with during college years.
